WHY WE BE TALKING LIKE THAT

Did you know that there’s a dialect of English in the US called African American Vernacular English (AAVE)? People all over the world unknowingly use AAVE all the time because of its prevalence online and in pop culture. The words “lit,” “bae” and “fam” are perfect examples of words that existed in AAVE before they became mainstream. Many may dismiss AAVE as slang or incorrect English and mistake it for ‘the language of the Internet.’ Ethnolinguists and others who study AAVE would argue otherwise.

Ashiq who has been studying AAVE for over a decade and has given talks on it at high schools and universities across the US came over to Vettaths and gave a fun and intriguing talk on the origins, cultural appropriation, and discrimination revolving around AAVE.
